School Application

G1-G8 (Elementary School/ Middle School)

  • Application Process for Canadian Elementary Schools:

    1. A guardian must be appointed in Canada, and both parties should sign a guardian declaration.
    2. Apply to schools through an education board representative, which is easier and more professional than applying independently or through a domestic agency.
    3. After receiving a conditional acceptance letter from the education board, pay one year’s tuition and obtain the official acceptance letter.
    4. Submit the visa application to the Canadian visa center.

G9-G12 (High school)

  • Public High Schools in Canada

    • Generally, there are two intake periods: September and February. For September enrollment, it is recommended to start preparations as early as October of the previous year, as most education boards begin accepting applications in December, with a processing period of 4-8 weeks and a deadline at the end of May. For February enrollment, preparations should begin in June of the previous year, with education boards typically starting to accept applications in August, a 4-8 week processing period, and a mid-November deadline.
  • Private High Schools in Canada
    • The admission periods are more flexible, generally occurring in September, November, January, April, and July. The application timeline is also flexible, so parents should stay updated on the application information for their target schools.
    • These schools generally only have a September intake. It is advisable to start preparations in August of the previous year, as most private schools begin accepting applications in October, with a processing period of 4-8 weeks and a deadline at the end of December.

ESL courses (English as a Second Language)

As an international student in high school, every school requires students to take ESL.

There are five ESL levels in total, each level lasts one semester.

Reading steps:

1) Take the Placement Test-test your English level

2) Determine the length of study for ESL

3) If the test scores reach the level of locals, skip ESL and study English 10-12 with locals

example:

To enter the third level after grading, you need to complete three semesters of ESL.

In addition: you need to be very careful when choosing high school courses!

Because different majors in universities have different requirements for courses taken in high school.

Best application timeline

It is recommended to apply for 9th grade admission (applications start from the second grade of junior high school in China)

latest timeline

Studying abroad at a young age should start in the 10th grade at the latest. Otherwise, you may not be able to complete all required courses and may need to postpone your graduation.

But if you miss the best time, don’t panic too much。

Performance Requirements

  • Generally, to apply for graduate studies in Canada, students need to have a GPA of over 3.0 (above 75%) in at least the last two years of their undergraduate studies.

language Test Results

  • International students who studied in non-English speaking countries are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS for admission.
  • Arts and engineering programs generally require an IELTS score of 6.5, with no less than 6 in any component; business, law, education, and similar fields typically require a score of 7.0 or higher.
  • Some schools offer dual admission for students whose language scores do not meet the required standards.

  • Business management programs typically require the GMAT, while science and engineering programs usually require the GRE.
  • Some programs require the GRE, such as: biochemistry, biology, chemistry, English literature, mathematics, physics, and psychology.
  • Although most master’s programs in Canada do not require GRE scores, good GRE/GMAT scores can effectively enhance the competitiveness of an application.

Work Experience Requirements

  • Q: Is work experience required to apply for a master’s program in Canada?
  • Not necessarily; it depends on the specific school and program requirements.
  • Most programs do not require work experience.
  • Business management and MBA programs may have some work experience requirements, but not all schools do.
  • Some education programs may recommend providing work experience.

Can I Apply Across?

  • The application process for a master’s degree is different from that for an undergraduate degree. Most master’s programs require a relevant undergraduate background, so the options for choosing a major are not very broad. Only some business, computer science, and education programs accept cross-disciplinary applications.
  • Of course, for some specialized fields, even if applicants have a relevant background, admission is not guaranteed, such as in medicine.
  • Most Chinese students who choose to study for a master’s degree in Canada opt for programs in business, computer science, engineering, or education, which are also relatively easier fields for immigration.

When To Prepare For What?

  • If you want to apply for the semester starting in September next year, you typically need to start preparing materials and selecting schools between August and October of the previous year.
  • Our teachers can also help you prepare the relevant application materials based on your target school and your overall background.
