Parent Immigration

To sponsor an applicant’s parents or grandparents to immigrate to Canada, the sponsor must be a citizen or permanent resident residing in Canada.

Minimum Income Requirement

If the guarantor resides outside of Quebec, the guarantor must have an income that reaches 1.3 times the LICO (Low Income Cut-Off) for each year during the three years prior to the application, including during the immigration process. However, in 2021, due to the pandemic, this increase of 30% is not required. The income standards for the last three years are:

  • Proof of income for 2024 does not need to be provided at the time of submission. However, according to the law, during the processing period (currently about 2 years), the guarantor must still meet the income requirements, which increase by about 1-2% each year compared to the previous year.
  • As long as the spouse is willing to co-sign as a guarantor, their incomes can be combined. The co-signing spouse must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada.

Methods For Counting People

  • Include the guarantor’s spouse, children, the person being guaranteed, and the family members of the person being guaranteed. For other special situations, such as marriage, divorce, the death of a relative, or the birth of a child, please contact our consultants for advice.
  • For example: If the applicant is single and has no children, and the guarantor is a widowed mother, count as 2 people.
  • If the applicant’s family consists of three people (one child) and they have previously guaranteed the male’s parents, with a 20-year guarantee period not yet elapsed, and are about to guarantee the female’s mother, who has a spouse and one minor child not accompanying (but still needs to be counted), count as 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 8 people.

Income Calculation Details

  • “Income” refers to pre-tax income, which can include both self-employed and employed income. Generally, this is the value on line 150 of the applicant’s tax return (Notice of Assessment, NOA).
